The Night of The Hunter

Today in lecture theatre two we watched a balck and white film from 1955 called "The Night of The Hunter". Robert Mitchum plays a pychotic preacher who follows a brother and sister across the country in search of their fathers hidden money. The preacher, Harry Powell finds himself facing a thirty day prison sentence where he meets a man whome has been convicted and sentenced to death, by hanging. The preacher heres the man talking in his sleep and obtains enough information to seek out his family and the money. On arrival the preacher woes and weds the widow and trys to persuade the children even though they promised their father they would keep the money a secret. As the story goes on, the preacher murders the his wife, the chilrens mother. Upon the disapearance of their mother the brother, John decides both of the siblings should run away. After weeks of travelling along the river they come across a home where the children settle in and begin to feel safe again with a women.

I have already given you most of the story so I won't spoil the end so I will leave it at that. To my suprise, another really good film. Although I admit I did have a giggle in a few places I still really enjoyed the movie. You havent let us down yet Phil lol, good choice of movies, very inspiring stuff.
One of the things I really enjoyed about this movie was the transition of scene themes whilst the children were boating along the river. Whilst they where on land I found the characters and scenery very creepy and dark, almost like a horror movie. Only when the children where travelling by boat I got the feeling that they where travelling through a portal, From bad too good. It was almost like river between their home and their destination was like a fairytale, a long dream. I say this because some of the scenery became more mystical. For instance the spider web was exagerated in size and didnt really fit into the previous scenery. The animals too didn't seem like they would of fit into the scene before because it was more hostile, unlike on the river where it seemed dreamy, with "cute" animals.
Below two rabbits watching over the children from the riverside bank.

At the end of this dreamy journey they come across their guardian angle. Protector of the children, someone they can trust and love, in their time of need. This women really reminds me of a saint. My view of the film tells me that she is considered an angle were as the preacher would be considered as a devil. A saint with a gun and alot of love.

The image i have used which is above is from the opening scene of the movie. I have just used this image as a reference to her and the children who she cares for. The way this is set out also tells me she is the center, the protector, someone the children look up to.

Just posting this, ill have a comparison of reviews up later.
