Edward Scissor Hands

Edward Scissor Hands is a beautiful story about a man who has been artificially made by a mad scientist in a large gothic mansion which sits dominantley at the top of a perfect little suburban town. Edward who is played by Johnny Depp, is approached by a local avon lady and welcomed back into their home were he finds himself falling in the love with the families daughter Kim who is played by Winona Ryder. At first the family find it difficult to adapt to Edward living with them but eventually he becomes accepted as one of the family and a revered member of the neighborhood. Edward begins to find great use for his scissorhands, he uses them for landscape gardening and eventually becomes a very sort after hair dresser. For anyone reading this post, I do not want to spoil the film if you have not seen it before, so I will leave the plot at that.

What I really liked about this film was the way in which it made me feel. I found that this film, unlike some I have seen recently had given me alot of different emotions. I remember when watching this film that I became very aggressive every time the character Jim approached and spoke to Edward. His charcter was very jealous, obsessive and also very devious. The film also made me laugh in places, and at some points it also made me feel pretty low. One of the things that this film does well is the way that they make a bad situation commical. When Edward is trying to dress himself at the begining of the film you feel very sorry for him because it must be impossible to lead a normal life without having any hands. However when he trys on the clothes for the first time, he accidently cuts through the straps which leave the clothes in a heap on the floor. Even though this is sad and frustrating, it is one of those rare occasions which can put a smile on your face in a sad situation.

The image above has been taken from the movie. The scars which cover his face are a result of him being very nervous around other people.

One of the main focus points about this movie is the set design. It is very perculiar that such a dark, gothic mansion sits above a very pastel coloured town.
