After my meeting with Alan last week we decided that I had an idea but I hadn't thought it through, or it didn't make as much sense as it originally did when I first came up with the idea. Originally I wanted to do an animation about Flanders fields, or Ypres which was a very famous/important battlefield throughout the duration of WW1.
I have been researching this week about WW1 and how I could transcribe a piece of text or a war poem which is to do with the feutility of war. We spoke about how the WW1 was seen as the most pointless war because several of thousands of people lost their lifes just to gain little distance across the battlefield, which was seen as a suicide mission.
The things which will be in the posts to follow are my research of the "life in the trenches" which is what i aim my animation to be about. I want to tell a story using stills and some animation about one soldiers life amogst the trenchs which shows the impossibilities of living amongst one.

Rigging and Skinning Character Progress
Here are some of the updates from the maya tutorials for the character Binding, Skinning and Rigging.
This is my progression through the character so far. I haven't completed the tutorials but I intend to do so throughout the week even though we are being marked on them tomorrow. I have had poor time management throughout this project which is something that I will amend at the start of the transcription. A problem which I will put to one side and focus on the rest of my university work starting from this next project.

Narrative Updates
Now I have the internet back and are able to get into university I am now able to upload back to the blog. In this post I will show what I have been doing for the Narrative group project because I haven't really uploaded any of what I have been doing on this project to my own blog.
Anyway in the pictures below are the finished boat which will be put into the lagoon scene later on today along with the female scientist, along with some tweaking, ready for animating after our group meeting tomorrow.
To fit our style of art I have had to desaturate the colors for the boat in order to match them up with the rest. In our animation we are not using any bump or normal mapping on our models because out main focus will be on our characters.

In Flanders Fields - Transcription Ideas
I had already heard this poem many years ago, researching in this area for my transcription project reminded me of a very powerful and relevant poem which is a perfect example of how my animation could develop over the time I have, this poem I believe could be a strong influence for a starting point to my project.
"During the Second Battle of Ypres a Canadian artillery officer, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, was killed on 2 May, 1915 by an exploding shell. He was a friend of the Canadian military doctor Major John McCrae.
John was asked to conduct the burial service owing to the chaplain being called away on duty elsewhere. It is believed that later that evening John began the draft for his famous poem 'In Flanders Fields'."
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I really like this image above, I think that it is really powerful piece of imagery which sends the right message to the audience. What really stands out for me is the selected color palette which has been used to create this. I believe that if this image was too bright then the atmosphere would be completely wrong, making this image less effective.
